  1. Central library has a leaflet called "Out of the Shelves" which contains lots of books with reference to gay, lesbian and transgender fashion. It is on the 3rd floor.

They also have a queer section which is stacked full of books on the subject you are interested in. http://viewpoint.birmingham.gov.uk/02_Catalogue/02_004_TitleResults.aspx?media=&language=&branch=&authority=&junior=

You can also look at websites such as http://www.theory.org.uk/ctr-quee.htm which will give you the basics in queer theory.

In terms of primary research... there is a underground party scene in London called "Vogue Fabrics" which frequented by some of the people who used to be on the scene during Leigh's time but also a younger generation. If you want to go I can get you on the list. You can also see a drag king competition called 'King of the Castle'in London which will put you in touch with that community.

Another good book is "The History of Lesbian Hair" this talks about queer theory and maybe more user friendly that some books on queer theory. http://www.amazon.com/History-Lesbian-Hair-Mary-Dugger/dp/0385480377

This is a subject that is very well documented and there are literally millions of books written about it!

I would suggest that if you are trying to do something that is "shocking, new and alternative" this is not it.... thoughts?
